Visa & Cost

Non-Immigrant “ED” Visa

Non-Immigrant ED Visa may be granted to applicants who wish to pursue their full-time education, internship, or any other educational programs in Thailand.

    1. Passport or travel document with validity no less than 6 months
    2. Visa application form completely filled out and signed
    3. Recent 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm photograph of the applicant
    4. Letter from the school, training institution, or company in Thailand which must be typed in the school/company’s letterhead signed by an authorized person and a copy of school license or business registration. Copies of documents must be signed by an authorized person and affixed the seal.
    5. In case of an internship, a letter from the university in which the applicant is enrolled
    6. Dependents of students (under 20 years of age) who have enrolled for a full-time, long-term educational course in Thailand are eligible to apply for a single-entry Non-Immigrant O visa. Required documents are the same as those required for a Non-Immigrant ED visa, plus proof of relationship (such as marriage certificate, birth certificate) and proof of additional 500,000 THB or equivalent deposit in a bank account per person. A civil partnership certificate is not accepted.

Documents in languages other than Thai or English have to be translated into either Thai or English and notarized by notary organs or relevant diplomatic/consular missions.
The consular officer reserves the right to require additional documents or an interview with the applicant, as deemed necessary.

3 months

Travelers coming to Thailand with this type of visa will be permitted to stay in the Kingdom for a period not exceeding 90 days.
Holders of this type of visa are entitled to stay in Thailand for a maximum period of 90 days. They may apply for an extension of stay at the Office of the Immigration Bureau and may be granted such extension for one year from the date of their first entry into Thailand.

Those who wish to stay longer or may wish to change their type of visa must apply for permission at the Office of Immigration Bureau located at Government Complex Building B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, Laksi, Bangkok 10210, Tel 0-2141-9889 or http://www.immigration.go.th. The extension of stay as well as the change of certain types of visas is solely at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a visa only at the Thai Embassy or Consulate-General in their home/residence country or at the designated Thai Embassy. Therefore, travelers are advised to contact the nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate-General to find out where they may apply for a visa to Thailand before departure.

Cost of living

International student lives on a budget of 15,000 to 25,000 baht a month, that is about USD 455 to 758 (exchange rates at THB 33 per USD 1). That budget covers all cost of living, including accommodation, food and beverages, shopping, and it covers hobbies and leisure activities, too. Depending on your lifestyle and spending habits, you might spend less or more.

 

University tuition fees

1/ Tuition fees at public universities (Chulalongkorn University)

    • Tuition for Bachelor’s program: 64,000 – 68,000 THB/semester
    • Tuition for Master’s program: 83,500 – 90,000 THB/semester

2/ Tuition fees at private universities (Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC))

    • Tuition for Bachelor’s program: 698,700 – 1,040,500 THB/year
    • Tuition for Master’s programmes: 376,700 – 539,300 THB/year

 

Student living fees

You will need between 15,000 and 25,000 THB per month to cover your costs of living in Thailand. Depending on your lifestyle and spending habits, you might spend less or more.

 

Student accommodation fees

There are two main types of accommodation:

  • On-campus dormitory: 5,000 – 9,600 THB/month (Sometimes the utilities are included in the price) 
  • Renting a private house (1–3 rooms outside the city center): 8,800 – 20,300 THB/month (Additional utilities expense around 2,700 – 3,500 THB) 
  • Renting a private house (1–3 rooms in the city center): 15,300 – 35,600 THB/month (Additional utilities expense around 2,700 – 3,500 THB) 

 

Food fees

Around 6,500 – 9,600 THB per month on food and groceries. This largely depends on your personal habits, how much you eat out, and so on.

 

Transportation fees

A monthly pass for public transport costs around 1,300 THB without any student discount. Bangkok, the capital city, has the widest range of transport options.

 

Extra fees

    • Books and other study materials: 5,000 – 5,800 THB/semester
    • Entertainment (cinema, sports, concerts): 1,200 – 2,700 THB/month
    • Student visa fee: 80 USD for Single Entry, then extend for 1 year later at THB 1,900. 
    • Private health insurance: the monthly fee depends on the type of medical coverage, the length of your stay, and so on
